How Did You Meet?

In case anyone is wondering, I'm pretty much a seat-of-the-pants writer. Which means I don't have the story all outlined beforehand, don't do major character sketches and plot points and timelines and whatever else. Instead, I have a situation or a character or a dream that intrigues me, and I just write. Sometimes that results in a little backtracking or touching up during another draft as I get to know my characters better, but that's what works for me.

So...here I am, writing along and someone asks one of my ladies a question. How did she meet the guy who's (sort of) in her life? And I stopped, because I'm not sure how they met. So I googled how people met their future husbands, read a few interesting tales, and now I want to hear yours. So...if you're married or dating, tell me how you met. Help get my creative wheels turning. If you don't have a significant other, or you think your story is too boring--make up a scenario. You never know, I just might use it. :-)

Besides, it'll be fun. :-)

Hi Jenness... I love how people met stories! Here's Mike and mine. I'm actually using the longer version to structure a book I'm writing at the moment.

mine is kind of unique, Dave's dad and mine were both Nazarene ministers. Daves dad pastored a church for a couple years , built a parsonage, and moved on. My dad came to pastor the same country church about 4 yrs later. I moved into Daves house( actually his bedroom became mine) then his Dad came to fill in at a church about 12 mins away. We went to the same school then but didnt know each other. He and his Dad came to a fall revival at our church and I jokingly told my girl friend that I bet I could get his class ring before the end of the year. Long story short, I lost the bet( he bought me a pre-engagement ring for Christmas) and we ended up married.Oh and being it was a parsonage he knew my phone number because it used to be his. Good luck writing, cant wait to read your book, will buy a suspence book next month to read the ad for yours lol, Becky Steidel

Does sound fun! Mine is not dramatic, but it is complicated. I was at school in Hobe Sound, Florida, which is Jon's hometown, and he was in school in Chicago, which is my home town. He got home for Christmas break a day before I left for break. He asked a mutual friend to introduce him to all these "Chicago people" at the school. I remember Gary introducing us, and I thought, "Wow, I'm glad my beautiful cousin is sick tonight!"

Competition. The last cake left for the day at the local bakery. Bidding each other up at an auction. The last signed first edition classic from that artsy bookshop (the one with the blind guy). Ha. I'm getting a little to detailed, but you get the jist of my ideas I think. Its always more realistic (for me anyways) if She doesn't think He is the man of her dreams the first time they meet. Annoyed is always easier to believe, and then they go deeper.

I love how I say all this like I've actually written something. haha. I guess you have the poet who likes to read prose view of it.

First time I remember Rick was I was in the dining hall, serving the drinks during campmeeting - probably about 8th or 9th grade...and he walked in with his family..I had never seen him before. When I saw him across the dining hall the thought crossed my mind "you are going to marry that boy someday" and I thought that was REALLY weird...I didn't think that way, ever. Kind of creeped me out, especially when I found out later he was two years younger then me, which at that age is a VERY big deal.

Don't remember him again until I met him when I was a Freshman in college on choir tour and we met at IHC, he was going to KCCBS at the time. Someone was actually introducting him to my cousin b/c they thought they'd make a good match, I happened to be standing beside her. "-) Still remember thinking how cute he was.

He came to HSBC for college, we were the best of friends all through college and after. I fell for him at some point and was interested in more than that...he wasn't and of course I didn't tell him I wanted more...after college I got a job offer as a nanny in NY and took it mainly to get away from him hoping that would help me move on. Then he decided after I moved away that he did indeed want more and when he came to visit just a few weeks after I had moved we started to date and the rest, as the saying goes, is history

I've told VERY few people that story, especially that first part, it's hard to believe I know, it's still hard for me to believe. What's even more weird is I have twice now predicted someone would get married that wasn't even dating when I told Rick they would, one of them the couple didn't even know each other yet...at least those two times I have proof because Rick remembers me telling him it would happen both times. "-)
